DAY # 6

Time Travel!

On the 7^th of July, I and my European colleagues went on a field trip to Oregon Trail sites though the Pottowatomie Country. This was one of the very first contacts we had with the creation of the American Culture. Also while we were at the Trail, listening to ours instructors’ narrations about what had happened there, it almost seemed like we were travelling in time.

No dia 7 de Julho, juntamente com os meus colegas europeus partimos para uma jornada nos Caminhos de Oregon (“Oregon Trail”), pelo campo de Pottowatomie. Este foi um dos primeiros contactos que tivemos com a criação da Cultura Americana. Enquanto estávamos no Trail, a ouvir as narrações dos nossos instrutores, sobre o que ali se tinha passado, foi quase como viajássemos no tempo.

This route was first discovered by fur trappers in the beginning of the 19^th century and later explored and mapped, by missionaries and emigrants influenced by the California Gold Rush. While we were there, we could imagine the mule pack and pioneer wagon trains passing slowly thought us, as they did in the past.

Esta rota foi primeiramente descoberta por caçadores de peles, no início do século 19 e mais tarde explorada e mapeada por missionários e emigrantes influenciados pela Febre do Ouro, na Califórnia.

Enquanto lá estávamos, foi-nos possível imaginar os comboios de mulas e caravanas a passarem lentamente por nós, como outrora haviam passado.

Although, it was safer to form into wagon trails, there were a lot of people who preferred walking along the route, on a trip that could last between 4 and 6 months (in average) to reach Oregon City, facing every weather conditions, hunting and fishing to survive. Do you believe?

Embora fosse mais seguro viajar em grupos de caravanas pelo Caminho de Oregon, imensas pessoas preferiam caminhar pela rota, numa viagem que poderia durar entre 4 e 6 meses (em média) até chegarem à cidade de Oregon. Durante esse tempo teriam que enfrentar qualquer condição meteorológica, caçar e pescar para sobreviver. Conseguem acreditar?

LOUIS VIEUX CEMETERY

We also went to the Vieux Family Cemetery, where are as well several graves of unknown emigrants who died of cholera while crossing the Vermillion River. It is important to mention that Louis Vieux operated this river toll crossing on the Oregon Trail.

Visitámos também o Cemitério da Família Vieux, no qual se encontram também diversas sepulturas de emigrantes desconhecidos, que morreram de cólera enquanto atravessavam o rio Vermillion. É importante mencionar que Louis Vieux administrava as passagens através rio, no Caminho.

A LECTURE ABOUT POLLUTION PREVENTION | USA TRIP JOURNAL - DAY# 5

This post is based on a Sustainability and Pollution Prevention class, lectured by David Carter a member the Pollution Prevention Institute at Kansas State University (and also a SUSI instructor). This lecture surely convinced all the European Student Leaders of how real numbers and the right data make a difference in a decision taking.

In 2012, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory developed a life cycle analysis of the energy that was used for electrical generation and transportation in the USA. The sources of energy for this processes included: biomass (4.55%); coal (18.32%); geothermal energy (0.24%); hydro energy (2.83%); natural gas (27.37%); nuclear (8.48%); petroleum (36.53%); Solar energy (0.25%); wind (1.43%);

61% of the energy produced is lost during its creation process, primarily by the releasing of heat.

Unfortunately the resources are transported and burned and at the end only 37% of energy is generated for use.

There is a lot of waste during the process. It doesn´t seem much efficient to me!

Este post é baseado numa aula sobre Sustentabilidade e Prevenção de Poluição, lecionada por David Carter, membro do Instituto de Prevenção de Poluição, na Kansas State University. Esta aula, garantidamente, mudou a prespectiva de todos os Estudantes Líderes Europeus, de como números reais e os dados certos podem fazer a diferença, no momento de se tomarem decisões.

Em 2012, o laboratório nacional Lawrence Livermore desenvolveu uma análise do ciclo de vida dos recursos que são utilizados para produzir energia e transportá-la para todos os EUA. As fontes de energia utilizadas neste processo incluem: biomassa (4.55%); carvão (18.32%); energia geotermal (0.24%); energia hidráulica (2.83%); gás natural (27.37%); energia nuclear (8.48%); petróleo (36.53%); energia solar (0.25%); energia eólica (1.43%).

61% da energia produzida é perdida durante o seu processo de criação, maioritariamente sob a forma de calor.

Todos os recursos são transportados e queimados e no final, infelizmente, apenas 37% são convertidos em energia utilizável. Durante este processo as perdas são numerosas e demonstram pouca eficiência no procedimento.

WHAT IS POLLUTION PREVENTION?

According to US Environmental Protection Agency’s definition: Pollution Prevention is the reduction or elimination of wastes at the source instead of reducing it at the end of the activity process. We are preventing pollution whenever:

· We use resources more efficiently;

· Substitute hazardous substances for less harmful ones;

· Eliminate toxic substances from the production of raw materials, water, energy and other processes;

Note: Recycling is not considered pollution prevention.

Solutions: Change the materials, the process or the technology;

The benefits: less liabilities and risks; Reduction in costs; Performing according environmental regulation requirements; financial savings; improved reputation.

Segundo a definição da US Environmental Protection Agency (Agência da Proteção do Ambiente): a Prevenção de Poluição consiste na redução ou eliminação de desperdícios na fonte da atividade em vez de no final. Prevenimos poluição sempre que:

· Utilizamos os recursos de forma eficiente;

· Substituímos substâncias perigosas por substâncias menos prejudiciais;

· Eliminamos substâncias tóxicas da produção de: matérias-primas; água; energia e outros processos.

Nota: Reciclar não é considerado um método de prevenção de poluição.

Soluções: Mudar os materiais, o processo e ou a tecnologia.

Os benefícios: menos obrigações e riscos; redução dos custos; agir conforme os requerimentos da regulação ambiental; uma reputação “mais limpa”.

SUCCESSFUL EXAMPLES AT K-STATE:

EXAMPLE #1:

It was suggested by an intern to add a conductivity sensor to a brake-manufacturing company industry process. Adding this device it would be ensured an efficient measure of the water quality in the Chemical Finishing Department. The sensor allowed to qualify how dirty or clean the water of the industry was by the level of its conductivity.

The first measure only took one minute and twenty seconds, until the Department had the amount of water needed for a working day. Before this change the company used to run water for 10hours a day, 730,000 gallons of water a year (2,763,351L ). This little changed saved the company 600,000 gallons of water a year (2,271,247 L), a cost of only $14,600/year, due to the really cheap prices of energy in KS.

The cost of the sensor was inferior to $700.

Sugerido por um estagiário de uma empresa de produção de freios para carros, foi adicionado ao sistema da indústria um sensor de condutividade, cuja função é medir de forma eficiente a condutividade da água utilizada, no Departamento de Acabamento Químico. O sensor permite quantificar o quão limpa ou contaminada a água se encontra através dos níveis de condutividade da água.

A primeira medição apenas demorou um minuto e vinte segundos, o tempo necessário para recolher a quantidade de água necessária para a atividade do Departamento Químico, no dia em causa. Antes desta mudança, a empresa despenderia 10 horas por dia de água, equivalentes 2,763,351L por ano. Esta pequena mudança levou a que a empresa poupasse 2,271,247 L, um custo de apenas $14,600 por ano, devido aos preços muito baixos da energia, no Estado do Kansas.

O custo do sensor foi inferior a $700.

EXAMPLE #2:

There is a company which has a fire suppression system and due federal regulation they have to make sure they have enough pressure on the line.

This company has two different pumps which would be run for 37 minutes, releasing 750 gallons (approx. 2839L) a minute, until getting the needed pressure. This water were released to their pavement, in this case to their parking lot.

Per year they spent 2.4 million gallons (9,084,988L) of water.

The change: forwarding the water to the pumps, instead of not using it at all after it had been released at the parking lot.

Saving: 2.4 million gallons (9,084,988L )of water per year.

Uma empresa com um Sistema de supressão de fogos, devido a regulação federal é obrigada a garantir que tem água com pressão suficiente em linha.

Esta empresa apresenta duas bombas de água distintas, que por dia funcionavam durante 37minutos, libertando 2839L por minuto, até que tal pressão fosse assegurada. Esta água era libertada para o pavimento, mais em concreto para o parque de estacionamento da companhia.

Por ano, eram gastos aproximadamente 9 milhões de litros por ano.

A mudança: reencaminhar para as bombas e reutilizar a água após ter sido libertada para o parque de estacionamento.

Poupança: aproximadamente 9 milhões de litros de água anuais.

There are many other examples of how to be pollution preventives. Another case is the substitution of petroleum-based paint per water-based paint at car painting shops. Using for example powder coating instead of spray painting, it is not only cleaner to use but also less costly economically and environmentally.

Existem muito outros exemplos de como se ser preventivos da poluição. Um outro caso é a substituição de tintas à base de petróleo por tintas à base de água, nas lojas pintura de carros. Usando por instância tinta em pó em vez de tinta em spray, não apenas se usa um recurso mais limpo, como também um recurso economicamente e ambientalmente menos dispendioso.

WHO ARE VILLAINS IN THIS STORY?

Electricity companies do not produce more than what is demanded. The demanders are responsible for the amount produced. So if we demand more we will use more resources and many of them are non-renewable. By that way we are spending great amounts of inputs which (in this case) will only result in 37% of usable energy.

And yes, we can be sustainable, but the truth is that even consuming renewable energies we can be doing the opposite; however, it was two days ago when we started living above our “sustainable”-possibilities.

To summarise, every solution that we come up with is going to have an environmental impact on itself, still it is worth trying.

As companhias de eletricidade não produzem muito mais do que aquilo que os consumidores exigem. Os consumidores são os responsáveis, em parte, pelas quantidades de energia produzidas. Exigindo e consumindo mais, despenderemos de mais recursos (sobretudo recursos não renováveis). Desta forma, estamos a gastar grandes quantidades de inputs que (neste caso) apenas 37% serão convertidos em energia utilizável.

Sim, claro que podemos ser sustentáveis, mas a verdade é que mesmo consumindo energias renováveis, fazemos o oposto. Contudo, foi há dois dias que começámos a viver acima das nossas possibilidades-“sustentáveis”.

Concluindo, todas as soluções que proponhamos terão o seu próprio impacto ambiental, no entanto vale sempre a pena tentar.

A DAY IN TOPEKA | USA TRIP JOURNAL - DAY #1

After my exhausting trip on Wednesday I arrived at Manhattan Airport and spent the night at the Kansas State University's dorms. Kansas State University was opened in 1863 and was the first public institution of higher education in K-State. Nowadays, this University is widely attended by students from all over the USA and the globe.

Rapidly I met my new colleges that came from different countries of Europe just to study during this summer in the USA. Like me, my colleges won at their countries a Fulbright Scholarship and were chosen to be the representatives of their countries during the program.

Na passada quarta-feira, após a minha viagem exaustiva, finalmente cheguei ao Aeroporto de Manhattan, no Estado do Kansas e passei a noite nos dormitórios da Kansas State University. A Universidade do Estado de Kansas foi inaugurada em 1863 e foi a primeira instituição pública de ensino superior neste Estado. Atualmente, a Universidade é amplamente frequentada por alunos de todos os Estados da América, assim como de todo o mundo.

Rapidamente, conheci os meus novos colegas, todos provenientes de diferentes países da Europa, que tal como eu viajaram para os Estados Unidos para este programa de verão, após serem selecionados pelos seus países parar serem os seus representantes.

DAY #1

The program started on the 29th of June, however as I explained to you in the previous post, due to the US Embassy system’s problems I arrived later. So my first day at the institute does not match with the first day of the program.

On the 2nd of July we (the participants of this Fulbright program) spent the day in Topeka, at the Kansas State Capitol Building. The Kansas State Capitol was built in 1869 and it took 37 years to be complete. Curiosity: the capitol is 399 feet (122 meters) by 386 feet (118 m), and 304 feet (93 m) to the top of the cupola.

And guess who had the opportunity to have a guided tour inside the building and went to the top of the cupola?! Yes, that's right! Me!

O programa começou oficialmente no dia 29 de Junho, no entanto como já tinha explicado no post anterior, devido aos problemas que surgiram na Embaixada dos Estados Unidos, a minha viagem teve que ser adiada. Portanto, o meu primeiro dia no Kansas, não coincide com a data inicial do programa.

No dia 2 de Julho, passámos o dia em Topeka, no edifício da Capitólio do Estado do Kansas. Este edifício foi construído em 1869 e demorou 37 anos a estar completo. Curiosidade: as dimensões do capitólio são 122 m por 118 m e a cúpula tem 93m de altura.

E adivinhem quem teve oportunidade de fazer uma visita guiada no interior do edifício e foi até ao topo da cúpula?! Sim! Certo! Fui eu!

The first two photos were taken in the Governor's office. In the last one you can see me nears the Flags in Rotunda. This Rotunda represents the nations and states that have claimed all the portions of Kansas.

PRESENTATIONS

KDHE

During the morning we attended several presentation and discussions. First, we were presented to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The speakers were: Bill Bider, Director of the Bureau of Waste Management; Mike Tate, Director of the Bureau of Water Overview and Rick Brunetti, Director of Bureau of Air Overview.

We were told what is done in the KDHE and how Kansas does its control in this different means. Concepts as "Steward" and "Environmental Stewardship" were also discussed, as well as: who as the responsibility to be Environmental Steward and their duties as professionals, the types of Environmental Stewardship activities, the Bureaus programs and others.

Durante a manhã assistimos a várias apresentações e debates. Em primeiro lugar, fomos apresentados ao Departamento de Saúde e Ambiente do Kansas (KDHE). Os oradores foram: Bill Bider – Diretor do Serviço de gestão de lixo; Mike Tate – Diretor do Serviço de Gestão e Inspecção das Águas; e por último Rick Brunetti – Diretor do Serviço de Inspeção do Ar;

Foram-nos apresentados: as tarefas de que a KDHE se responsabiliza e como é que o Kansas controla estes diferentes meios. Conceitos como: “Administração” e “Administração Ambiental” também foram discutidos, assim como quem é que tem a responsabilidade de administração ambiental e os seus deveres enquanto profissionais; os tipos de atividades de Aesponsabilidade Ambiental, os programas dos Serviços, entre outros.

Matt Casey, the Director of Government Relations at the Kansas Board of Regents also joined us. And we were taught how it is possible to convert a bill in a law.

TOM SLOAN

The last speaker was Tom Sloan. Sloan has won 11 times the elections for the office of Kansas House of Representatives. He was member of the Kansas Board of Regents and in the past he served in the Kansas State Senate. In the 2nd of July he took some of his time to speak with our group about his career path and how it is to be re-elected 10 times. We were completely surprised when invited by himself to go to his office!

O último orador foi Tom Sloan. Sloan ganhou por 11 vezes as eleições para o secratariado da Casa de Representantes do Kansas. No passado, foi membro do Quadro de Regentes e serviu para o Senado do Kansas. No dia 2 de Junho, Tom empregou algum do seu tempo a falar connosco sobre a sua carreira e sobre as suas 10 reeleições. Fomos completamente surpreendidos quando convidados pelo próprio, para visitar o seu escritório.

STUDYING IN THE USA! WHEN, WHAT AND WHY?

Some days ago I started getting ready for one of the many adventures in my life. I did not know what I was expecting, which challenges I would face, but I just let things happen and tried to not make a big storm about it.

In the last month I had been too busy with my exams and that did not let me get too excited about my trip. My last exam was on the 27th of June and I was supposed to travel in the 29th, which only gave me one day to pack. Although, the US Embassy was having some problems and I could not get my visa in time, so in the last minute I discovered that I had to go to the US on the 1st of July.

I received a Fulbright Scholarship and I am going to spend 5 weeks in the USA, the first ones will be at Kansas State. During those weeks I will be at a Summer Institute for European Student Leaders studying Environmental Stewardship. All the costs of this scholarship are covered by the U.S. Department of State.

Há alguns dias atrás comecei a preparar-me para uma de muitas aventuras, que vou enfrentar nesta vida. Sem qualquer ideia do que me esperava ou do que teria que enfrentar, deixei que os momentos apenas fluíssem.

No mês passado, o meu tempo foi maioritariamente ocupado por sessões intermináveis de estudo e avaliações, o que não me permitiu ter muito tempo disponível para me entusiasmar o suficiente com a viagem. O meu último exame acabou no dia 27 de Junho à tarde, sendo que a viagem estava marcada para o dia 29. O que me deixava apenas um dia para fazer as malas. Porém, a embaixada dos Estados Unidos tinha outros planos definidos para mim e devido a problemas esta apresentava no seu sistema, o meu visto não pode ser emitido a tempo. Assim, a minha viagem foi adiada e no último minuto preparei tudo para embarcar para os Estados Unidos, no dia 1 de Julho.

Recebi uma bolsa de estudos Fulbright e passarei as próximas 5 semanas, nos EUA. As primeiras serão no Estado do Kansas. Durante estas semanas estarei num Instituto de Verão para Estudantes Lideres Europeus, a estudar Administração Ambiental. Todos os custos desta bolsa são totalmente suportados pelo Departamento de Estado dos Estados Unidos.

Life is not meant to be lived in a single place. I was struggling with this thought for a long time. I did not feel like myself sometimes, because I was tied in the same city for a long time and my life was becoming unsatisfying monotonous.

I wanted to try something new. I wanted to do something good and useful for myself and for others.

I did not think twice when I received an e-mail from my university announcing that the applications for a Fulbright Scholarship were open. I started immediately filling the application in. I had help from the bests! From my Cambridge School teacher, Robert Plews, who is also a columnist at 6N1K and from my favourite teachers at ISCTE Business School: Graça Trindade, whose husband also received a Fulbright PhD Scholarship previously (this was something I discovered after applying). And Fernando Ferreira who has a vast working experience in the USA.

Não estamos destinados a viver para sempre no mesmo lugar. Há um bom tempo que lutava contra este pensamento. Estando "amarrada" à mesma cidade há imenso tempo, a minha vida rendeu-se a uma certa monotonia insatisfatória.

Saciava por experimentar algo novo. Algo que me beneficiasse não apenas a mim, como também à minha comunidade.

Não pensei duas vezes quando recebi um e-mail da minha faculdade a anunciar a abertura das candidaturas para uma bolsa Fulbright. Comecei imediatamente a preencher a minha candidatura e tive a ajuda dos melhores! Do meu professor da Cambridge School, Robert Plews, que também é cronista no 6N1K e dos meus professores favoritos na ISCTE Business School: Graça Trindade, cujo marido no passado também recebeu uma bolsa Fulbright para PhD (facto que vim a descobrir mais tarde) e Fernando Ferreira, que tem uma vasta experiência laboral nos EUA.

Creio que foi William Fulbright quem afirmou que a educação internacional é a nossa melhor oportunidade de convertermos ideologias em aspirações humanas.

Neste momento, aspiro por um mundo melhor e um "Eu" melhorado!

WHY ENVIRONMENT

I am interested in different subjects. And environment is one of them. As a future economist and citizen, environment causes is a topic that I should be aware of. As Malthus said: “population tends to grow exponentially” (and that’s true) but resources don’t. Resources are finite. And society despite of anguish over population problems, we are trying to find solutions without abdicate of any of the privileges we enjoy right now. We think that, for example: "farming the seas will end up with overpopulation problems" and by that: any action isn’t needed at all, because the problem will solve itself. That’s not true. All the actions are needed, even the smaller ones.

In my Economics studies, we talk about externalities, especially about a negative externality called pollution. And one reality is that, nowadays, it is still cheaper for the polluters to keep polluting than to reduce polluters from their industry and diminish the pollution levels. And as population becomes denser, simple and common solution as recycling at home becomes overloaded.

When I was younger, sometimes, I had nightmares about the consequences of our actions have at environment. We have been destroying the quality of living even that sometimes it is unconsciously. But the truth is that we contributed for the environment degradation, and what now? We need faster and efficient solutions and we need it not tomorrow, but today!

Os meus interesses estão dispartidos em diferentes assuntos, sendo que o Ambiente é um deles. Como futura economista e cidadã, as causas ambientas são um assunto do qual devo estar informada. Como Malthus afirmava "a população tem uma tendência de crescimento exponencial", enquanto os recursos são finitos (o que é completamente verdade!).

Apesar dos cidadãos ficarem angustiados com os desafios populacionais, não são tomadas quaisquer ações. Tentam-se resolver problemas, sem eu seja necessário abdicar das regalias que beneficiamos atualmente. Pensa-se que cultivar os mares irá terminar com a fome no mundo e com isso, quase todos os braços permanecem cruzados. Este pensamento e atitude não podiam estar mais errados! Todas as ações são necessárias, mesmo as mais pequenas fazem a diferença.

No meu curso de economia, falamos muito sobre externalidades. Sobretudo, sobre uma em particular. Ela é negativa e nada de bom se extrai dela: a poluição. A realidade é que, hoje em dia continua a ser barato para as entidades poluidoras permanecerem a poluir, em vez de reduzirem as quantidades de poluentes na indústria e diminuir os níveis e poluição. Ao ritmo que a população o tornar-se mais densa, medidas simples e comuns, como reciclar, deixam de ser eficientes.

Quando era pequena, às vezes pensar sobre o facto de que estamos a destruir (mesmo que inconscientemente) a qualidade de vida dos nossos contemporâneos e descontentes dava-me pesadelos.

A verdade é que, estamos a contribuir para a degradação ambiental. E agora?! Precisamos de soluções rápidas e eficientes. Este trabalho não deve de ser adiado para amanhã! Mas sim adietado para hoje!
