HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA | USA TRIP JOURNAL - DAY# 3

On the 3rd of July we spent the afternoon getting ready for the celebrations of the Independence Day. I got perplexed when I was told that we had a budget of $300 to spend ONLY in fireworks, and believe me fireworks are really cheap!

I wondered what was so special about it that magnetized all Americans. There were several firework tents cropping up all over; flags everywhere, in every street and almost everything was white, red and blue (the colours of the American flag).

No dia três de Julho, passámos o início da tarde a preparar-nos para as celebrações do Dia da Independência. Fiquei perplexa quando nos disseram que podíamos gastar APENAS $300 em fogo-de-artifício e acreditem em mim, o fogo-de-artifício nos Estados Unidos pode ser muito barato mesmo!

Indaguei o que havia de tão especial no fogo-de-artifício para extasiar de tal modo os Americanos.

Por todas as ruas predominavam as cores: branco, vermelho e azul (as cores da bandeira Americana), surgiam diversas tendas de venda de fogo-de-artifício e bandeiras nacionais por todo o lado!

WHY ARE FIREWORKS SO IMPORTANT?

All gets back to history:

Fireworks have been with Americans since the nation’s very beginnings and it was used to persuade population in believing that they could be their own nation. Also in the latest 18^th century, it was used by politicians to attract crowds to their speeches. It was no merely coincidence the use of fireworks in George Washington Inauguration!

Retornando no tempo e na história:

O fogo-de-artificio tem marcado presença junto dos Americanos desde os começos da sua nação, tendo sido usado para persuadir a população na crença de que poderiam ter a sua própria pátria. Adicionalmente, nos finais do século 18, era utilizado pelos políticos para atrair as multidões aos seus discursos. Não foi por mera coincidência que George Washington utilizou fogo-de-artifício na sua Inauguração!

In this day, almost everybody wore blue outfits and if you remember, the blue in the American flag means "vigilance, perseverance, and justice”.

Neste dia quase toda a gente se vestiu de azul e para vos lembrar sobre um pouco de história, o azul na bandeira americana simboliza: vigilância, perseverança e justiça.

The red colour stands for hardiness and valour while the white means purity and innocence. The stars represent the American states, while the stripes represent the 13 initial states.

A cor vermelha simboliza a robustez e os valores americanos, enquanto que o branco representa a pureza e inocência. As estrelas são símbolo dos Estados Americanos, ainda que as 13 riscas sejam a representação dos Estados iniciais.

CULTURAL SHOCKS & CURIOSITIES:

The Independence Day was spent in David Carter’s house, one of the instructor of the Summer Institute for European Student Leaders. David and his family received all the European students with arms wide open. American families are really welcoming and everybody seem warm and friendly from the very start.

O Dia da Independência foi celebrado em casa do David Carter, um dos instrutores do Summer Institute for European Student Leaders. David e a sua família receberam todos os estudantes europeus de braços abertos. As famílias americanas são verdadeiramente muito acolhedoras e toda a gente é desde o início meiga e amigável.

1. Nothing to hide: While showing their house, Carter’s family had nothing to hide! Whereas a Portuguese family would only show the house’s common areas to a first-time guest, Carter family were no shy showing all the house’s divisions, including the bedrooms and sharing their family stories!

Nada a esconder: Enquanto mostravam a sua casa, a família Carter não tinha nada a esconder! Em contrapartida, numa visita inicial, uma família portuguesa apenas mostraria as zonas comuns da casa. No entanto, a família Carter não foi tímida ao mostrar todas as divisões e partilhar as suas histórias familiares, em cada espaço!

2. Americans learn how to drive when they are really young: One of the Carter’s family members, who is only 14, is already able to legally drive. I was shocked when I knew it! I only got my driving licence when I was 19!

Os Americanos aprendem a conduzir desde muito cedo: Um dos membros da família Carter tem apenas 14 anos e já está apto a conduzir legalmente. Fiquei chocada quando descobri! Apenas tirei a minha carta de condução aos 19 anos!

3. “Arms REALLY wide open”: Hospitality is never missing around Carter’s family. In fact, the family was hosting in their house a participant of the program from last year, who would stay with them during the whole month. Also, we were told that if we need anything (and they meant it) we could always go to their house, even if we felt homesick or wished to cook a house made meal.

De braços BEM abertos: Hospitalidade nunca falta junto da família Carter. De facto, a família durante o mês de Julho acolheu, em sua casa, um participante do ano passado. Ainda assim, no caso de que precisássemos de alguma coisa a família demonstrou-se disponível a receber-nos, mesmo que nos sentíssemos com saudades de casa ou desejássemos preparar uma refeição caseira.

"22 ANOS DE DESIGN NA FAUL" EXHIBITION

The Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon(FAUL), in partnership with the MUDE- Museum of Design and Fashion, celebrates the "22 anos de Design na FAUL” (22 years of Design in FAUL) exhibition. Commemorates the excellence of national Design and public university, the higher education and the excellent work performed by licensed, masters and doctors in various areas of Design over 22 years history of FAUL. This is an exhibition that shares the quality of academic development, creative maturity and success of all professionals that FAUL launches every year on the market and the key role of design in society.

A Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa, em parceria com o MUDE-Museu de Design e da Moda, a exposição “22 anos de Design na FAUL” celebram a excelência do Design nacional e do ensino superior público universitário eo excelente trabalho desenvolvido pelos licenciados, mestres e doutores, em diversas áreas de Design, ao longo de 22 anos de história da FAUL. Trata-se de uma exposição que partilha a qualidade da formação académica, o amadurecimento criativo e sucesso de todos os profissionais que a FAUL lança todos os anos no mercado e o papel fulcral do Design na sociedade.

During its inauguration on January 23, the exhibition could count with more than 500 visitors and its end will be extended to March 23, 2014.

Durante a sua inauguração, no dia 23 de Janeiro de 2014, a exposição pôde contar com mais de 500 visitantes, a qual será prolongada até 23 de Março de 2014.

All the pieces of the exhibition co-inhabit a narrative of 10 principal concepts: Colouring, (re)Counting, Drawing, Trying, Expose, investigate, Modulate, Moving, Simplify and Living. And unfold in the form of hundreds of prototypes, models and projects in the form of drawings, illustrations, photographs, everyday objects, street furniture, clothing, jewelry, graphic design, multimedia, window displays and research projects.

Todas as peças da exposição co-habitam segundo uma narrativa de 10 conceitos pilares: Colorir, (re)Contar, Desenhar, Experimentar, Expor, Investigar, Modular, Movimentar, Simplificar e Viver. E desdobram-se sob a forma de centenas de protótipos, maquetas e projectos, sob a forma de desenhos, ilustrações, fotos, objectos de uso quotidiano, mobiliário urbano, vestuário, joalharia, design gráfico, multimédia, window displays e projectos de investigação.
